THOMAS - TROUP HOUSE - OLD MACON ROAD

A rare photo of the Old Thomas house at the northwest corner of Thomas' Cross Road (Old Macon Road and Old Hawkinsville Road.   The area was settled by the Thomas family as early as 1807 and was the governmental center of Laurens County when the first county courthouse was built.

The house, possibly more than 175 years old,  was purchased by Gov. George M. Troup, of Laurens County before his death in 1856.  It remained in the family for nearly a half century. For many years, the property was owned by Howard L. Cordell, Sr..  Tragically, the house burned several years ago.

Ramsay's house was located at the southeast corner of Bellevue and Ramsay Streets.  The gazebo, thought to have been built before 1900, was moved and placed in the back yard of Mr. and Mrs. B.B. Page just across Ramsay Street from the Ramsay home.

DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL - NORTH CALHOUN STREET, MID 1940S

This was Dublin High School in the late 1940s.  It was first constructed at Calhoun Street School and later became the High School.   The building, which was located closer to thecorner of North Calhoun Street and Woodrow Avenue, was burned in the early 1950s.  Plans to restore the partially burned school were abandoned in favor of a modern, state-funded school which was built shortly thereafter and served students until 2002.

On a mission with an area greater than Connecticut the priests necessarily spend many hours a week driving to and from churches and homes. Many of the houses along the road are empty - signs of the strong trend to the cities...(Highway 96-Houston County)

THE HOME OF EARLY AND HATTIE HOBBS, submitted by Mary Ellen Sharp

The attached picture is of a house 3 miles from the old courthouse square on GA 257.  It was built in the early 1900s, probably around 1910, by Early and Hattie Hobbs.  It was back from the road behind a pecan grove.  The land was originally purchased in the late 1860s by Robert F. Maddox and then was inherited by his daughter Hattie.  Pictured are Estoria Hobbs (young girl) on left, Early Hobbs standing behind Hattie, W. A. Lee and Lila Hobbs Lee, with children Mavis and baby Carl.

Contributed by Mary Ellen Sharp, the great gramd aughter of Early Washington Hobbs and Hattie Maddox Hobbs.  The property was originally purchased from Col. Stubbs by Robert F Maddox in the late 1860s after the civil war.  Robert Maddox was my gggrandfather.  He is burried in alittle family cemetery by the side of 257 just above the property of John and Estoria Hobbs Brown.  If you are interested I have a picture of that cemetery.  If you are familiar with the Frank Waldrip property and the little meat market, it is just beyond that.  The little meat market property was once part of that property.
