Old "Burch?" Home on Georgia Highway 19 South, Glenwood Road just north of the Laurens-Wheeler County line. The front portion of this house is built in a style which was most common before the Civil War.
Does anyone have any information about the house and its former owners? If so, comment here or email the Historical Society at dublinhistory@yahoo.com.
My dad (born in 1920) remembers it being owned by Elmer Curry and his daughter Alma lived in it when I was growing up. It was sold in 1999, she must have passed away before then.
ReplyDeleteFor many years the home was occupied by Miss Alma Pearl Currie (1910-1998) , a maiden lady and prominent educator in this part of Laurens County. Here is the link to her "Find A Grave" entry/memorial http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSsr=41&GScid=2158274&GRid=17618777 And here is the link to Miss Alma's obituary, including many interesting biographical details, http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/laurens/obits/c/currie2346nob.txt
ReplyDeleteI believe the home belonged to her parents - Rollin Elmer Currie (1878-1954) http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=17617593 and Annie Lou Evans Currie (1884-1965) http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=17165277 They are all buried at the nearby Beulah Baptist Church cemetery in Wheeler County.
Miss Alma's nephew, Larry Currie Avery of Glenwood,GA is still alive and might be able to provide more details concerning the home's history.
I helped replace A/C units that had been stolen during remodeling. A Payne owned it at the time. Can't remember his first name, but he is kin to Dale Payne that owns Telfair Shell.
